Snowflake,
founded in 1878 by Mormon pioneers, perches on the northern flank of
Arizona's White Mountains. Nestled next to the ever-flowing Silver
Creek, the Snowflake valley was populated by Ancestral Puebloan
Indians for several thousand years. Their petroglyphs and kiva ruins
are scattered among the scented juniper and sagebrush mesas.
The
Town of Snowflake is the northernmost community in the White Mountains,
set among sweeping plains at an elevation of 5,600 feet. Contrary to its name, the community enjoys mild
climate year-round, shielded from harsh winters by the White Mountains
to the south.
Snowflake
was founded in 1878 by Mormon land agent William Flake, and together
in honor of Apostle Erastus Snow, the settlement became known as
Snowflake. Much of the rich pioneer tradition lives on in Snowflake,
and the community hosts a city walking tour that features the homes
of the original 19th century settlers.
The recently completed Mormon Temple sits atop
the hillside overlooking the community, only one of two such temples
in Arizona. The temple services the 35,000 members of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (LDS) whose home is in
northeastern Arizona.
Home
to Arizona's only pulp and paper mill, the community's dominant
industries include pulp mill support industries, ranching, and agricultural
products. The industrial park has recently been expanded to include
a new 100-acre hydroponics plant, one of the largest in the southwest.
With
Snowflakes strengths: strong family values, a tightly-knit community,
rich cultural history, mild climate, and exceptional housing and
recreational opportunities---it's no wonder why Snowflake is one
of the fastest growing communities in northeastern Arizona.
A pleasant
3-hour drive from Phoenix or Tucson, or 2 hour drive from Flagstaff,
you'll find that the relaxed lifestyle of Snowflake, the friendly
community, and the diverse recreational opportunities make Snowflake
an ideal location to visit.
