Attractions in Northeastern Arizona

Fishing

Arizona's White Mountains are famous for their abundance of wildlife. Rainbow trout, German Brown trout, and even pike can be found in the dozens of cool lakes and miles of crystal clear streams and creeks that come down from the White Mountains.

Fishing in the National Forests, State and local waterways is licensed through the Arizona Department of Game and Fish. A resident fishing license with trout stamp is required, and can be obtained at most sporting goods and some hardware stores. Visitors may purchase a one-day fishing pass as well. Visitors or residents wishing to fish in the mountain lakes of the Apache Indian Reservation require special fishing licenses, available for sale on the reservation.

Gaming

Owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, the Hon-Dah Resort Casino is a state of the art resort and conference center. 500 slot machines with progressive jackpots, a poker room, lounge, restaurant, bar, RV park and convenience store are also on the property. Throughout the year, big name entertainment is featured.

The casino is open 24 hours a day year-round. The restaurant includes nightly specials and Sunday Brunch, moderately priced. The Good Sam RV Park includes space for over 200 sites, and provides full power, satellite TV, LPG, dump station, and laundry facilities. Hiking

The White Mountain Trail System (WMTS) offers a variety of trail opportunities both scenic beauty and trail skill levels. It is a series of 11 loop trails on the Lakeside Ranger District. The Lakeside Ranger District is located approximately 1 hour south of Snowflake. Several of the loop trails connect to each other. The system is designed for non-motorized travel: hiking, mountain bike, and equestrian use. The natural terrain and slope of the WMTS may limit use by visitors with physical or visual limitations. Less challenging trails are available in the area.

Hopi Villages

Just a half day's drive north of Snowflake, you'll find the Hopi Nation, and the famous villages of Kykotsmovi and Second Mesa, some of the oldest inhabited villages in the United States. In this region, you'll also find the Hopi Villages, where artisans and craftsman display jewelry and the world famous Kachina dolls. On occasion, visitors may be allowed as spectators to certain religious dance ceremonies. The Hopi Cultural Center includes a museum, restaurant, and motel.

The Hopi are religious people, practicing their religion with different ceremonies throughout the year. Villages are open to visitors daily. Ten of 12 villages have closed their Kachina dances to all non­Indian public, however most social dances remain open. Snake dances and Flute ceremonies are closed. Meteor Crater

50,000 years ago, a huge iron-nickel meteorite, hurtling at about 40,000 miles per hour, struck the rocky plain of Northern Arizona with an explosive force greater than 20 million tons of TNT. The meteorite left a crater 700 feet deep and over 4000 feet across. Today the crater is 550 feet deep, and 2.4 miles in circumference. Meteor Crater's Visitors Center includes the Museum of Astrogeology and an Astronaut Hall of Fame, gift shop and snack bar. The Museum of Astrogeology provides visitors with a casual self-guided tour of exhibits and video presentations vividly portraying how the meteorite impacted, the devastation that resulted, and the significant role that the Crater plays in the study of earth and space sciences. 

The Visitors Center is open year round, from 6:00AM to 6:00PM May 15th through September 15th, and 8:00AM to 5:00PM the remainder of the year. A guided rim trail hike is included in the permission, and runs from 9:15AM to 2:15PM. Also included in the price of admission is the Museum of Astrogeology, which includes exhibits and video presentations. Monument Valley

Within a half-day's drive from Snowflake, visitors can tour the scenery of the Navajo Nation, famous for the "signature" southwestern scenery of Canyon de Chelle and Monument Valley. Monument Valley was a favorite location for western movie producers such as John Ford, who filmed many of his classics against the breathtaking backdrop of Monument Valley. Because of it's unique formations, Monument Valley is still used today in both film and television commercials, and is a favorite stopping point for European visitors wishing to experience the native southwest. You'll want to arrive early or stay late into the day, because the sunrises and sunsets on the majestic formations are spectacular. Passenger vehicles are allowed into the park for a fee, but high clearance or four-wheel drive is recommended. At the Visitor's Center, you can purchase authentic Navajo crafts, or satisfy your appetite at the restaurant.

Monument Valley is open year round, and is owned and operated by the Navajo Nation. The park and visitor center are open daily 7 a.m. - 7 p.m., May-Sept; 8a.m. - 5p.m., October-April (weather permitting); Thanksgiving 8-noon. Last admission 30 minutes before closing. Closed Jan. 1 and Dec. 25.Admission is $2.50 per person; seniors over 60, $1.00. Children under 8 are admitted free. Visitors should not photograph the Native Americans, their homes or their possessions without asking permission; a gratuity is usually requested. Other restrictions apply. Petrified Forest

A 40-minute drive north of Snowflake is the internationally famous Petrified Forest National Park, the largest park of its kind, where visitors can walk among giant fallen petrified wood. The Painted Desert, adjacent to the Petrified Forest, comes alive with a brilliant palette of desert colors for a sunrise or sunset that you won't want to miss!

Open year round except December 25th, the National Park hours are from 8:00AM to 5:00PM, with extended hours during the summer. A $10 entrance fee per vehicle is charged, $5 per person for walk in or bicyclists. The National Parks annual pass or Golden Pass can also be used for entry. Sunrise Ski Resort

65 runs over three mountains, separate snowboarding area, cross country ski trails, and a special children's area make this resort one of the most popular in the southwest. Owned and operated by the White Mountain Apache Tribe, the high speed quad chairlifts, with a capacity in excess of 16,000 skiers per hour, are also open during the spring months for scenic viewing.

During the winter months, the park is open from 9:00AM to 4:00PM, and closes at 12:30PM on Sundays. Lift tickets range from $15 (seniors) to $37 for adults, children age 12 and under from $16 to $21.During the summer months, chairlift rides are available for $4 children, $8 for adults, and $15 for mountain bikers.
